Book Review: Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

A Review of Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn *. * ·

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton is third of eight novels in the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn. This novel unfolds a delightful tale of unexpected love and passion between the witty and intelligent Penelope Featherington and the charming yet extremely oblivious Colin Bridgerton.

Plot:

Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend’s brother for . . . well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret . . . and fears she doesn’t know him at all.
Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought of as nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can’t seem to publish an edition without mentioning him. But when Colin returns to London from a trip abroad, he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same—especially Penelope Featherington! The girl who was always simply there is suddenly the girl haunting his dreams. When he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide . . . is she his biggest threat— or his promise of a happy ending?

Review:

★★★★☆

By now, we all heard of the popular Netflix series, Bridgerton. We have fallen in love with the Duke and Duchess of Hastings, Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and Viscountess Kate Sharma, and for many (including myself) the budding relationship between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.

In anticipation for their upcoming season, I decided to read their story, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton. I read this novel back in the summer, but decided, after a Bridgerton series binge with my roommates, to read it again. And in all honesty, while I loved to watch their love story unfold, there were moments I just wanted to stop reading (only out of pure anger).

Without spoiling too much of the novel, within the chapters you get a peek into both Penelope's and Colin's minds and thoughts. You begin to watch Colin realize that the girl he's known for 10 years is the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. You see angry fights and conversations that evolve from secrets Penelope is keeping. Most importantly, you get to watch Penelope and Colin's relationship blossom into a true loving partnership.

My one criticism of the novel is how unbearable Colin is at moments. From the first two novels, you see Colin as a put together, well loved man in society. In this novel, we watch him lose his temper more often than not. If you do not want to see Colin in this light, this novel might not be for you. But if you believe that anger sometimes spews from being deeply in love with someone, this book is perfect for you!

  1. I loved this book series so much. The family dynamic was one of my absolute favorite parts about it. The Netflix series is good, but doesn't capture their banter and love for one another enough for me.
